Career as an Independent Instructor.

I have been fully qualified since 1979.

Recently I have ceased to instruct and have allowed my registration to run out. Ian Newton (picture not available)

now teaches some of the pupils I still had on the books when I ceased to be an Approved Driving Instructor and

I now pass on any enquiries to him.

Driving Licence.

You must be at least 17 years old to drive a motor car. You need a provisional (or full licence
for another vehicle). The current cost is £23.00. Apply at least a month before you plan to start.
You can get a form from the Post Office or your driving instructor / school. All new licences are

photo licences. Foreign licence holders, who do not qualify for an exchange licence, can

drive for one year after moving to the United Kingdom but will require a provisional licence to

take both parts of the driving test. Both parts are required to prove identity. For more details see
Driving in the U.K.

Other I.D..

Unless you have the new photo licence you will need other identification to take the tests.

Information Sheets.

I produce my own 'info sheets' for various topics. These aim to give, in as few words as possible, the logic

behind what you are being taught. These are especially useful for the manoeuvres which are included in the test.

Driving Instructors please contact me for personalised sheets.
Costs are similar to photocopies.

Theory Papers.

These are required to assess your knowledge of driving theory and to assist in taking the
theory test. Please note the theory test must be passed before taking the practical test.
There is, however, no need to take the theory before starting to learn to drive. The theory
pass certificate is currently valid for two years.

Books Required.

The ONLY book that you MUST read is The Highway Code £1.49. As this is no longer supplied
with your first licence it makes sense to get it first. Available from major book shops and some
newsagents. Make sure that you get the larger book with 'Advice on The Theory of Driving'.

The Highway Code On-Line

Click here for the Highway Code on-line.

Optional. Driving published by the Driving Standards Agency £11.95.
This, plus the Highway Code, is the book most instructors teach by.

The Complete Theory Test, also D.S.A. includes all current theory questions and answers. £12.00.
The Advanced Drivers Handbook by Nigel & Margaret Stacey. (The RoSPA Handbook) £4.99.
This is excellent as a guide to accident avoidance by defensive driving.

Motorway Tuition.

I strongly recommend all pupils to take at least a 2 hour motorway lesson. Learners are not allowed
on the motorway even with an experienced instructor.
